Paula Abdul announced earlier this summer that she would be leaving ‘American Idol’.  Rumors began that it was just a publicity stunt and she would come back, but this wasn’t the case. ‘American Idol’ announced Wednesday that Ellen DeGeneres will be taking her place on the shows ninth season.  She will be the fourth member of the panel, including Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi.

From what I know of Ellen, she is bubbly, outgoing and a little bit crazy.  Sounds just like Paula!  I believe she will bring a different perspective to the show, though.  I have not heard of her having prior singing or dance experience (outside of what she does on her show everyday), so I am very curious how this will work out.  Maybe she will give better feedback because she will see things as the majority of America does, as opposed to a professional?  Who knows?

The bigger question for “Idol” fans is how Simon will treat her.  Will they argue and butt heads like he and Paula did?  If they get along too well, will they be boring?  Everyone loves to hate a villain and Simon is the villain of ‘American Idol’.  If he doesn’t have anyone to argue with, the show would certainly lose its appeal.  I know the show is supposed to be about the singers, but the entertainment from the fights adds to the ratings.  Ellen is outspoken, so maybe she won’t put up with any of Simon’s crap. Plus her bank account probably rivals his.  Maybe, just maybe, she will get the chip off his shoulder, if that is even possible.

“American Idol” is and always will be a family friendly show. Everyone can find something to enjoy. With Ellen, what “Idol” now has is less of a train wreck, and more of a quick witted every woman. In the end, kids will love her, adults will respect her, and “Idol” will remain the biggest show on TV.

The new season begins in January 2010 on FOX.  Tune in then to see how this new judge will do and how entertaining  she will be.
