JessicaSimpsonJessica Simpson will return to the world of reality television with a new show on VH1 called The Price of Beauty. It will show  Simpson traveling around the world, visiting different cultures “to meet women, study local fashions, dietary fads and beauty regimes.”

“I have always believed that beauty comes from within and confidence will always make a woman beautiful, but I know how much pressure some women put on themselves to look perfect,” Simpson said in a press release.

She knows that pressure indeed.

You may remember the infamous pictures of Miss Simpson looking a little plumper than usual at a chili cook off, sporting some ill fitting high waist jeans (do these really look good on anyone?)

The show has potential, if done properly.   Simpson will even try some of the “shocking things that women do to make themselves beautiful. Picture ‘Fear Factor.’”  This is what has me nervous.

All too often, as seen with More to Love, a dating reality show for overweight people, these shows meant to educate, spread awareness and open up the public view of beauty and compassion in actuality end up exploiting and mocking the very people they are trying to represent.

The intention of the program is to show that the definition of beauty varies around the world, and what one culture deems beautiful isn’t necessarily universal, but I fear it may turn into Extreme Diets and Weird Beauty Rituals From Around the World. The title of the show even gives that impression: what price are you willing to pay to be beautiful?

The last thing we need is to see even more extreme measures that can be taken in the name of beauty.  We already tattoo eyeliner on our lids . We should be working on not caring so much and accepting ourselves as we are, as opposed to having a one upping contest of how ridiculous we can be for the sake of being attractive

Still, I think its worth while for women to educate ourselves on the traditions of other cultures and how women are treated and viewed around the world.  Knowledge and understanding are never a bad thing- and hopefully we can all come away with a new definition of beauty, and a new outlook on our own bodies.

I just hope Simpson doesn’t skew the world’s view of America in the process with any chicken/tuna/buffalo wing questions while indulging in the local eats.

The Price of Beauty began filming this July and will air sometime in 2010.  Will you be tuning in?
