If you thought Americans could be closed minded when it comes to laws regarding same sex unions, don’t move to the Ukraine. The Ukraine makes Governor Schwarzenegger look like a Kennedy.
When Elton John toured an orphanage in the country last week, he and his longtime life partner, David Furnish, became enamored with a young AIDS infected 14 month old named Lev. While John has previously said he had no wish to adopt children, due to the fact that he is 62 and on the road much of the year, he immediately changed his mind when he met the boisterous toddler.
Unfortunately for John and his partner, a Ukrainian adoption official has ruled that the couple cannot adopt the child under Ukrainian law. Like a “blue state” without as many Walmarts, the country does not recognize same sex unions, yet has an adoption requirement that only married couples may adopt. The official went on to state that John is too old to adopt as well.
While the Ukrainian president may potentially step in and overrule the adoption prohibition, he would then also require the couple to adopt Lev’s brother who also resides at the orphanage. While it remains a slight possibility, politics are politics, and this adoption is looking less likely then catching Hillary wearing anything but a pantsuit.
