Tiger_Woods-LGWhat a week we just had in sports!  We saw Roger Federer get upset and lose the US Open to Juan Martin del Potro, Terrell Owens made his Buffalo Bills debut (and did nothing), the Miami Hurricanes upset Georgia Tech and everything was capped off with a fantastic Sunday Night Football game that left the debut the new Cowboys Stadium on a sour note.  Catching all those moments in real time made for great memories and there is only more to come with this week.

The baseball regular season is all but wrapped up.  The division standings are basically set and the Wild Cards will be decided by the top teams collecting wins against non-contending teams trying to limp out to the off season.  So there isn’t much going on in the world of baseball this week.

Football is really all there is worth watching right now.  College and NFL teams are starting to show what they are made of and big name players are starting to hit their stride as the seasons begin.  If you are not a football fan, just bear with it for a couple weeks and then you’ll have plenty of other sports to enjoy.  NHL has started its preseason and the regular season will begin shortly and just after that will be basketball.

Until then, here are the games of this week that you should sit down and watch with your kids, there’s bound to be something to remember.

Top 3

These games are my top picks and have the most potential for memorable moments.  I can’t promise anything but there are enough story-lines and intense athletes involved that something big should happen.  So kick back with the family and enjoy some truly unscripted drama.

*Please note that all times listed are Eastern Standard Time

1. NFL – Kansas City Chiefs at Philadelphia Eagles – Sept. 27 – 1 pm

This is the next chapter in the Michael Vick saga and the stage is set for a big return to the NFL.  He will finally be allowed to be in uniform and with starting quarterback Donovan McNabb currently injured, Vick may even get some time as quarterback.  While he has been making amends off the field, his play on the field will win him back even more fans.  In Philly’s last game, Kevin Kolb did not seem to be in total sync with his players and if he continues to falter, Vick may be asked to step in.  The Eagles were not intending to bring him in so early in the season but injuries have forced them to change plans.  This will be worth watching just so you are your kids can say “Yeah, I watched Michael Vick’s first game back, can you believe he…..”

2. Golf – THE TOUR Championship – Sept. 24 – 27

Tiger Woods is currently the number one golfer in the world so it is only fitting that he is at the top of the FedEx Cup leader board and the favorite to win the championship.  When all is said and done, Tiger Woods will be called the Best Golfer of All Time and a win at this event will be just another step towards that status.  But he will not be the only one in contention for the championship; Padraig Harrington (6) and Phil Mickelson (14) are still in position to make a move for the cup.  This is the last big event of the year and all players will be giving it their all to make a final showing.  Tiger is one of the most competitive athletes in sports and if he is anywhere near winning on Sunday, make sure to watch because he does amazing things when he can smell a victory.

3. New York Yankees at Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim – Sept. 21 – 23

Each of these teams will win their divisions and most likely meet in the playoffs so this becomes a very important series for momentum going into the post season.  The winner of this series will enter the playoffs knowing that they can beat the best and have no fear about who they may play later.  They have met seven times this season and the Angels have won four of those games, so this series will also decide who will have the best record for the regular season.  Players will treat it like a playoff series and play will be intense. Angels’ Manager Mike Scioscia would like nothing more than to beat the Yankees and he will use all the tricks in the book to make first-year Manager Joe Girardi question his abilities.  With that kind of atmosphere and build up, something is bound to happen in these games and you will want to be watching when it does.

Quick Picks

  • #9 Miami at #11 Virginia Tech, Sept. 26 @ 3:30 pm – Miami has surged back into the national spotlight with big wins recently.  Can they stay undefeated and upset a very good (and also undefeated) Virginia Tech?
  • Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees, Sept. 25 – 27 – The best rivalry in all of sports and when these teams meet it is always intense and worth watching.

If you know of any big games I may have glanced over please comment and let me know.  Enjoy the week and keep watching for memories.
