When “Halo 3″ was released more than two years ago, the developers started a little side project to release during the lull before the new game “Halo: Reach”. They wanted to tell the “story within the story” and have players delve further into the mysteries that happened during the previous Halo games. This little project evolved into a full-sized project and now we have the game known as “Halo 3: ODST”.
Players step into the armor of an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper (ODST) and will not be playing as the characters they normally would in previous games. The game will feature settings and characters that will be darker and a script that is more character driven. The whole style of the game is designed like a film-noir movie with the music being more jazz influenced and the story being more detective like.
The game play is slightly different but the basics are the same; run, shoot, survive. There are new weapons and maps to explore but nothing too different from anything seen previously. It will feature new maps available for multiplayer gaming and new modes of campaign play that hardcore players will love. But the multiplayer mode is literally a copy of the “Halo 3″ disc with the new maps added on and one new mode of play.
Unless your child is an avid player that will not put down the controller, this game really isn’t worth the money. If you have “Halo 3,” just play it on a harder setting and you’ll get the same affect. But if you know that gamer who has the entire game memorized, the action figures posed and the t-shirts hanging in the closet, then this game will work for them. They will be able to satisfy their gaming needs while waiting for the next big game to be released.
It really is just another version of “Halo 3.” I would call it “Halo 3.1″ because it isn’t completely a copy of “Halo 3″ but it is nothing more than the “Halo 3″ story told from a different point of view. Don’t get me wrong, there is plenty in this game that wasn’t in other versions but it is nothing more than a regift of previous games. It’s like that wine set you get around the holidays which you just rewrap and then give to the neighbors. I would keep your money and wait for the entirely new Halo game or just try a different game all together.
