If you are a fan of mixed martial arts, or “MMA”, then you’re probably aware of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. And if you’re familiar with the UFC, then you probably know who Quinton “Rampage” Jackson is. What you may not know, however, is that he’s quitting fighting.
Jackson posted a long piece on his official website detailing a long list of grievances he has with the UFC and its owner and manager, Dana White. He claims that he was made to fight when he didn’t want to, didn’t get the recognition he deserved, and that White had issues with his pursuing an acting career.
The career in question seems to hinge on his role as B.A. Baracus in the upcoming “The A-Team” movie, a role made famous by Mr. T. Jackson claims that the sole reason for taking that role is for his father, with whom he used to watch the television show of the same name. This has proven to be a source of bonding between Jackson and his father, who has gone through drug abuse and rehabilitation, with Jackson at his father’s side all along.
Rampage Jackson’s commitment to his father and his children is beyond question. He has consistently stated that he wants to do right by them, putting them through college, and supporting his family by whatever means necessary. He seems to feel that continuing to fight will put that in jeopardy, and it’s difficult to make the case otherwise.
However, by choosing to end his fighting career like this, he is likely also canceling out of any contractual obligations currently in place (Namely, the fact that he’s currently a coach of Spike TV’s show “The Ultimate Fighter.”) Not to mention his legion of fans, all of whom seem disappointed in his decision to quit MMA. So the question is: is Rampage a better father for choosing to focus on his long-term health to better support his family, or is he setting a bad example by not sucking it up and honoring his responsibilities?
