Harry Potter sweetheart, Emma Watson, has added fashion designer to her resume by spending the past year designing a summer wardrobe for teens for the fair trade clothing company People Tree.
The 19 year old actress helped design a line of shorts, shirts, dresses and hats for the company, which works closely with 50 Fair Trade groups in 15 countries, to support developing countries and help promote environmental projects. You can read People Tree’s mission statement here.
“I wanted to help People Tree produce a younger range because I was excited by the idea of using fashion as a tool to help alleviate poverty and knew it was something I could help make a difference with,” Watson said of her latest project.
“I think young people like me are becoming increasingly aware of the humanitarian and environmental issues surrounding fast fashion and want to make good choices but there aren’t many options out there. It has been the most incredible gap year project,” she added.
“Gap year” is a term for the year some kids take off right after graduating high school, before the head to college or enter the workforce.
Emma’s words ring true. Kid’s are indeed becoming more aware of social and environmental issues, and the more they come to realize where their expensive shoes and brand name clothes come from, the more they will be to look past labels, and think about the kids their age working so hard for so little to make them. It doesn’t hurt that Emma made it so easy for teens to support something they believe in, not only by spreading awareness of People Tree and their global mission, but by designing fashionable clothing.
Miss Watson is not only a budding fashion designer, she is also quite the scholar. Emma is currently enrolled at Brown University for her freshman year of college.
