jessica-biel2Actress Jessica Biel, famous for her roles in movies like “The Illusionist,” the TV show “7th Heaven,” and dating Justin Timberlake, has joined an expedition to the summit of Africa’s Mount Kilimanjaro, in an effort to spread awareness of the global lack of clean water in many countries.

“This is a basic human necessity that needs to be addressed now,” said Biel, referring to the fact that more than a billion humans across the globe have no access to potable water. She will be joined on her climb by Lupe Fiasco and Isabel Lucas, with the remote possibility that Timberlake will also volunteer for the trip. Singer and producer Kenna, who is responsible for putting the event together, has said that more celebrities will attach themselves to the climb in the coming months, though no actual climb date has been announced as yet.

This is absolutely the best way to use one’s celebrity status — to call attention to an existing issue that may not be getting enough awareness on its own. It’s a sad comment that it takes something like famous people to effect change, but in the end, whatever works, works. That doesn’t mean, however, that only celebrities can do this. If parents volunteer their time and money to support causes they believe in, their kids will likely grow up knowing that altruism is a good trait to exhibit. This benefits us all in the long run, both materially and spiritually.
