Crosby_Sidney-LGIf you’re a golf fan or just watched on Sunday (which I said you should) then you saw a story book ending for a golfing event; both Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson getting a win.  Tiger won the entire FedEx Cup ($10 million) but Mickelson won the event and earned his first win since he was sidelined for six weeks when he wife was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this season.  A happy ending for everyone watching.

This week we get to welcome the NHL back into the national spotlight.  It may not be very popular in the entire country but the fan base it does have is avid and they love their sport.  Like any sport though, it is always worth watching and amazing things can happen.  There are bright, young stars like Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin that give you someone to root for and there are old rivalry’s that will continue to thrive.  The games are exciting to watch but if you have a local hockey team you can go to watch, take the kids, the games are much more exciting in person and well worth the experience.

With the NHL coming in, the MLB is on its way out.  The regular season will end this week so it will be the last chance you can see non-playoff teams play until next year. But the postseason is where baseball is played hardest and every run is meaningful and every pitch could mean elimination.  Baseball postseason is something to get excited about.

Here are this week’s picks for family games that all can watch and should provide some entertaining hours.

Top 3

These games have the most potential for magical moments but they play the games for a reason and anything can happen on any given day so you never really know what you’re going to get.  Enjoy!

* All times listed are Eastern Standard Time

1. NHL – New York Rangers at Pittsburgh Penguins – Oct. 2 – 7:30 pm

The Penguins are the reigning Stanley Cup Champions and it will be interesting to see how they come out and play.  Will they suffer from the dreaded Stanley Cup Hangover and not play up to the level that Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin did in their championship season?  The intensity they show in the first game will show a lot about their character and how well they will handle the success.  It’s a new season with everyone starting out on a level playing field (of ice) and the New York Rangers will want to come out and make a statement against the #1 team in the league.  Seasons are not made or broken on the first game but every game counts and winning teams will always want to win.  Watch just to see who wants it more; the reigning champs or the team looking to come out and show they can beat anyone this season.

2. NFL – New York Jets at New Orleans Saints – Oct. 4 – 4:05 pm

Both teams are undefeated, have star quarterbacks, are first in their division and are out to prove they can go up against the best the league has to offer and win.  Fortunately for us, only one team can win and that means both teams will come out firing and give everything they have to stay undefeated.  Drew Brees of the Saints and rookie Mark Sanchez of the Jets each love to throw the ball and have good receivers to throw to so expect high scores and high flying catches.  The Jets have taken down some big teams in recent weeks and have been getting cocky.  They will want to continue to show what their made of  but the Saints would love to give Sanchez his first taste of defeat as an NFL quarterback.  Should be the most entertaining game of the week to watch by far.  This is second only because the NHL is opening up its season and hockey has been gone for so long.

3. MLB – Minnesota Twins at Detroit Tigers – Sept. 28 – Oct. 1

Detroit is only two games ahead of Minnesota in the American League Central division so this four game series means everything to these two teams.  If the Tigers can win this series then they will win the division and make the playoffs but if the Twins can come out of the series in first place, then the season for each team will come down to the last three games against other teams.  This will be a hard fought, intense series with both teams basically having their seasons on the line.  Try to catch at least one game if you can because the players will play their hearts out and fight and scrap for each run. This is what baseball is all about.

Quick Picks

  • #7 USC at #24 Cal, Oct. 3 @ 8 pm- Cal is coming of a huge loss to Oregon and will look to prove they still belong in the top 10 by defeating the Trojans who need a big win to show they still can play for a national title.
  • The National League Wild Card is still up for grabs with the Colorado Rockies only hold a 2.5 game lead over the Atlanta Braves.  Each team will play the tough Milwaukee Brewers this week who would love to play spoiler for some team’s playoffs hopes.  Any one of the games could have something crazy happen.
  • There are hockey games all weekend, watch any of them to see which teams come out swinging in the new season.
  • Check out former New York Giant’s star Michael Strahan on his new TV show Brothers on Friday when there is only baseball to watch.
