I think it OK to put your kids in these events. I wish I would have participated in races as a kid. I don't know if they should start as young as 3 but 8,9,10..... why not? You're so right, we should really be focusing on the huge percentage of obese kids in this country.

thanks Kelly! I got into it through swimteam, actually, and I stopped doing triathlons when I stopped competing in swimming - wish I hadn't stopped! I did a try-triathlon (swim 400y, bike 10mi, run 2.5mi) a few years ago with the intent to pick up the 'habit', but it turned out to be very hard to find the time to train in between work and family commitments. Doing a full triathlon is still on my adult bucket list - so I may get out there yet!

trytri- That's awesome. I assume your parents found out about these and enrolled you, which means they took the time to research it for you (they arent very easy to find unless you happen to live close to them.)

Just out of curiousity- every run a real triathlon as an adult?

I competed in triathlons as a kid (9-14) and I wouldn't trade that experience for the world. Getting kids involved in sports and competition at a young age is a great way to get kids active for a lifetime. Events like triathlon teach kids about how good it feels to be active, how to set goals and acheive them, it teaches them mental toughness, and about putting in the effort to get the results - it also gives them a focus beyond tv, friends and video games. how could that be bad?
