Mindflex Is One Mind Blowing Game

By Jeremy Suede on September 30th, 2009

mattel-mindflex-LGRemember that old game where you tilt the top to try and steer a marble through a holey obstacle course?  Well if that game and computer had a baby it would be the Mindflex Game by Mattel.  This game actually uses your thoughts to guide a ball through a series of obstacles and you never actually touch the ball.  A lightweight headset uses many little sensors on the forehead and earlobes which actually measure the players brainwave activity.  When the player focuses the ball may rise up using a stream of air that is directly linked to the brains thought process so when they lose concentration the ball will descend.  Using a dial they will direct the fan and thus the ball through the course.

Navigating the ball through the course will require physical and mental coordination that, until now, technology just hasn’t been able to provide.  The customizable obstacle course can be repositioned into many different options so the possibilities are limited only to the players mind (literally).  This is a true telekinetic experience that will make you want to try it out once the kids go to bed.

At this years Consumer Electronics Show the Mindflex was a huge hit and was projected to be one of the top toys in 2009.  It will be the game kids will be talking (and thinking) about all through the holiday season and will want to have.  It is a little pricey at $80 but it will bring entertainment for kids as well as skeptical adults.  It does have some small parts so it is not for kids under 3 and smaller children should be watched if allowed to use.

If anyone takes the time to do a bit of reading on Neurofeedback (the technology by which this game functions), you’ll find that the current practices lean towards SMR and Alpha protocols. For those without knowledge of what this means, there are various frequencies when it comes to your “brainwaves”, ranging from delta associated with sleep, to beta and high beta associated with normal every day concentration and anxious concentration respectively. Now, the current practice leans towards SMR or Alpha because SMR is associated with a relaxed kind of intense concentration, while alpha is generally more relaxed. It’s much more complex then this, employing databases to see variations in your brain and that of others, and if you care you can wiki it :) .
