While five-year-old Simon Hughes was out walking with his father in Polk County, Texas, they came across a gator. Simon didn’t think twice, pulled out his gun and shot the gator. When they pulled it out of the water, they were surprised to find it was an 800 pound, 12 foot long monster!
Simon didn’t get scared. They found out that they alligator was five inches short of the Texas record. Because of this, Simon is determined to find an even bigger gator next year. Simon states, “I wasn’t even afraid, next year I’m going to kill me a bigger alligator.”
Simon’s father says he was a born hunter and it didn’t surprise him that his son easily killed the gator. His mother on the other hand seems to be trying stay calm, but says it scares her to see him next to such a big creature. She says the gator is so big that is almost looks “prehistoric.”
As a parent this scares me to death. Now, I don’t live anywhere near alligators and the thought of running across one makes me cringe. Regardless, I couldn’t imagine my kindergartner first off having their own gun and secondly killing something that weighs more than our entire family, combined. I won’t let my children play with guns of any sort and couldn’t imagine my kids killing a huge gator. It amazes me that the boy isn’t even the tad bit scared of such a big beast.
