Forget Humans, Get ‘My Monkey Baby’

By Germain Lussier on October 5th, 2009

Capuchin-Monkey-MDThe scenario we are about to describe sounds like the set up to a bad joke. The punchline, however, is that it’s totally real.

Adoption is a totally legitimate option for parents who are looking to have children but are unable to do it themselves. There are innumerable children out there in desperate need of tender love and care and adoption pairs them up with parents who can provide that.

In some cases, though, those parents don’t adopt a child. Instead they adopt a monkey.

“My Monkey Baby” is a new special that premiered Sunday on TLC and it’s about couples in the United States that not only adopt monkeys, they raise them as their own children.

Each couple has their own reasons. For example, Indiana couple Jesus and Carmen adopted a monkey because of “Jesus’ own difficult childhood” according to an interview they did with ABC News. Which Jesus they are referring to is up for debate.

Am I insane to say this is insane? Monkeys are beautiful and cute creatures and keeping one as a pet, as dangerous as that might be in some cases, seems to suffice if you really want one. But to raise it as a child and call it your son or daughter? It just seems a little too weird.

Did anyone out there see “My Monkey Baby” on TLC? Was it worth watching? Do you think these people are crazy or are they justified?

I saw this on TLC and was very disturbed by it. There was a part in this show were this young couple went to pick up a baby money from a “breeder”. They when into a room where there was a bunch of monkeys cadged, one of them whom was the baby’s mother, was grabbing for her baby, as this lady was holding it. They were all laughing at the mother monkey as if it was a big joke. Monkeys have deep bonds with their babies. I saw another program on the animal planet, and this one monkey’s baby was killed by a cheetah. The mom monkey carried her lifeless baby’s body around for 3 days! Moms need their babies, and babies need their mom’s.
It is legal to steal a newborn monkey in some states, but still unmoral in every way possible. They claim to love these monkeys as their own, but steal them from their mother’s at such a young age. From what I’ve heard these people have issues, they need some good meds, not a monkey. These beautiful social creatures should be free with other monkeys. How is this even legal? It needs to be stopped.

wow, people are really nuts. I know lots of people want to be parents and either cannot conceive of cannot afford to adopt, but come on – a monkey is not a baby! And, similar to the comment above – monkeys should be free to be monkeys. They aren’t like cats and dogs that have been domesticated over thousands of years! Also, the folks featured on the show are all of questionable mental stability – just watch for yourself, if you can stomach it!
