Now that it is finally starting to feel like Fall (or at least some version of it), it’s time to really get excited for the weeks ahead. The baseball post season is here and it is a whole different type of game in the playoffs. They are actually worth watching on TV and if you can get to a game with the family, I promise you will not be disappointed.
I will always remember as a kid going to a playoff game at Dodger Stadium and feeling for the first time what true intensity in baseball felt like. I couldn’t tell you how the game ended or who the other team even was but I vividly remember feeling the entire stadium shake with sold out crowd cheering after a score. Feeling 50,000 people all be happy, all at the same time, all in the same place is amazing and something I will never forget.
So here are my picks for this week, I hope you can catch at least one because I promise they will be remembered.
Top 3
* All times listed are Eastern Standard Time
1. MLB – Detroit Tigers at Minnesota Twins - Oct. 6 – 5:05 pm
The MLB has saved the best for last. For weeks the Minnesota Twins have been chasing the Detroit Tigers for the top spot in the American League Central Division and now it all comes down to just one game. This will be one team’s last game for many long bitter months and another team’s ticket to a chance at the World Series. Players will play with every bit of intensity they have and every pitch will have meaning, every play could actually mean the season. Even if you are not a baseball fan, WATCH THIS GAME. You will not be disappointed when the competition level is raised and the stakes are life and death. Or more precisely; a playoff berth or the long, cold off-season.
2. NFL – Green Bay Packers at Minnesota Vikings – Oct. 5 – 8:30 pm
After many years with the Packers and a bitter separation, Brett Favre wants nothing more than to completely demolish the Packers and prove that they should never have let him go so easily. He’ll have a chance do do so when he finally plays his old team on Monday Night. But I think the real story will end up being Aaron Rodgers. Favre waffled for so many seasons on whether or not to return and Rodgers waited patiently for his time to come. After Favre “retired” Rodgers was given the starting job and the Packers stuck by their man (causing the current rift between the Packers and Favre). Watch for huge games from each quarterback with the game ultimately coming down to who ever has the ball last in a come from behind drive. You’ll remember where you were when you saw Brett Favre play against the Green Bay Packers for the first time.
3. College Football – #1 Florida Gators at #4 LSU Tigers – Oct. 10 – 8 pm
When the #1 team in the nation meets the #4 team, that is is BIG game. The winner will continue to have national title hopes while the other team’s chances get much slimmer. Tim Tebow (college football’s most popular player) is coming off of a hit that resulted in a night at the hospital in his last game and LSU’s tough defense lead by coach Les Miles will be gunning for him. Tebow is the toughest competitor in the college game right now and he won’t ever give up but LSU really has nothing to lose and they can play with everything they have. As long as they don’t get blown out, they either beat the #1 team and show that they should be at the top or they get beat by the best team but prove they can hold their own against them. This will either be remembered as the game the solidified the greatness of Tebow or the game where he and Florida lost the chance for consecutive national titles and perhaps a second Heisman Trophy for Tebow.
Quick Picks
- NASCAR – Pepsi 500 – Oct. 11 – 3:31 pm – I’m not a big NASCAR fan but if I had a fourth pick of the week I would make it this race. With the end of the season so close and Jimmie Johnson so close to getting his fourth consecutive title, every race is worth watching. Plus NASCAR has the best in depth coverage. It’s pretty cool to see on TV. Check it out for a couple laps and get hooked.
- The MLB Postseason starts this week so any baseball you watch will be worth watching. The playoffs are a whole new season and anything can happen so watch for players to show who can perform in the clutch and who is worthless when it really counts.
- Check out UFC’s Ultimate Fighter with your older kids. It’s fascinating to see the training methods and what the fighters go through before they face off in some of the most real competition available in the world. Face it, MMA is the thing of the future, hop on the bandwagon with your teens because I guarantee they know what it is.
