Every Tuesday, KidGlue presents “Healthy Pick/Makes Me Sick” where Sarah Matheny takes a popular restaurant’s menu and uncovers the most healthy and least healthy items on the menu. This week: Applebee’s.

“Eating good in the neighborhood?”  Not by my standards.

I mistakenly thought it would be a walk in the park to find healthy eating options on Applebee’s menu.  After all, not only do they offer nearly a dozen salads, but they have a Weight Watchers sponsored portion of their menu.  Surely they must offer healthy choices for kids and parents alike, right?

Wrong.

  • Strike 1: Applebee’s does not offer nutritional information on their website.
  • Strike 2:  Applebee’s is currently involved in a lawsuit in which plaintiffs allege that in some cases, the Weight Watchers meals contain twice the amount of fat and calories that are stated on Applebee’s menus.
  • Strike 3: The only non-fried items on Applebee’s Kids’ Menu are the Kraft Macaroni and Cheese and the Oreo Milkshake.  Fail.

Still, here are your best and worst choices at Applebee’s.

Healthy Pick:  Chili Lime Chicken Salad

Hopefully you can convince your kid to eat a salad, or at the least have a bite of yours.  With 250 calories, 6 grams of fat and 24 grams of protein, this salad is not a bad choice.

Makes Me Sick:  Boneless Buffalo Wings With Blue Cheese Dressing

Though the Kids’ Menu has some treacherous choices, including the Grilled Cheese With Fries, which allegedly contains over 900 calories and the amount of fat in three pork chops, the worst choice of all is from the appetizers’ menu.  The Boneless Buffalo Wings have a hefty 1,724 calories, and no, you don’t get to subtract any for eating the celery.

All in all, if you truly want to eat good in your neighborhood, maybe you should do the cooking.
