Target Corp., has agreed to pay a $600,000 civil penalty for allegedly violating lead paint ban and has issued a voluntary recall of the products (listed below). The toys were knowingly imported and sold with paint or other coatings that contained lead levels above the legal limit. The toys were sold from May 2006 through August 2007 at Target stores nationwide and are listed here:
- Kool Toys Products
- Anima – Bamboo Collection Games
- Happy Giddy Gardening Tools and Sunny Patch Chairs
The federal lead paint ban was put in place in 1978 and the Consumer Product Safety Commission alleges that Target did not take appropriate action to keep unsafe products out of the reach of children and knowingly created a risk of lead poisoning and other negative health affects to the public.
“These highly publicized toy recalls were among many that helped spur action last year to impose even stricter limits on lead paint on toys,” said CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum. “This penalty should remind importers and retailers that they have always had the same obligation to meet the strict lead limits as the manufacturers.”
If you or someone you know has one of these products immediately stop use and return to the store purchased. If you have any other questions please visit www.cpsc.gov.
