toy-story-double-1Watching Pixar’s” Toy Story 1 & 2″ in 3D was like experiencing the movies for the first time all over again.  I remember all the hokie gimmicks and cheap effects that 3D movies employed just to remind the audience that they were watching a 3D movie but after seeing this new format, I am hooked. It is amazing the difference in clarity those little glasses give you.  Watching Buzz Lightyear fly/”fall with style” around the room was completely different than I remember it.  You get a feeling for exactly how big the room is and what is around.  You are not just watching the movie, you are experiencing it.

I saw the movie during a matinee and at Disneyland, so there were plenty of kids in the audience but I don’t remember hearing a peep out of them really.  Everyone was riveted to what they were seeing on the screen and enjoying every minute of it.  Even the trailers (green screen and all) had dimension to them and the kids ate it up.  Another huge plus was getting to see the trailer for the upcoming “Toy Story 3.”  Even the intermission was entertaining.  They showed “Toy Story” trivia and little original spots with your favorite characters.  The kids all sat through two movies (about 3 hours total) with a 10 minute intermission and were all fine with it.

Because the movies were originally made without 3D, there were no gimmicks in adding the third dimension.  You don’t have any crazy hands reaching out at you or objects flying towards you, it is simply the movie with more involvement.  I (and many others in the theater) were actually commenting out loud about what we were seeing.  At any given scene change you would hear “woah” or “wow” echo through the theater because the depth and dimension to the scenes give you a sense of actually being in the movie.  You see texture and can almost feel exactly what you are seeing.

All-in-all this was a fantastic movie experience and I would highly recommend it to children and adults of all ages.  The family will thank you for the fun time and everyone will enjoy themselves.  You can catch this double feature at your local theatre, just check the Disney.com site for show times and tickets.  I would expect some requests for “Toy Story” themed costumes for Halloween as well, so check here for some helpful accessories and costumes for your little Lightyear.
