sailing_yacht_01Apparently the Love Boat has come out of drydock! Dave and Hazel McCabe got married in May 2005 and immediately set off on a seafaring trip around the world, exploring the waters of Europe, Africa, The Caribbean, and America. During their trip, Hazel became pregnant and flew to the United Kingdom to give birth to their daughter Katie, then flew right back to continue their tour.

Now back home in Devon, England four years later, the family is hard at work developing a boat-building business. It seems incredible to imagine the stresses inherent a raising a child while out in the middle of the ocean, but with this origin in her history, Katie will probably grow up to be a little adventurer herself.

Sometimes we parents try too hard to protect our kids from all the perceived dangers of life — accidents, illnesses, what have you — and we forget that the human race is incredibly resilient and adaptable. We survived thousands of years before the benefits of antibiotics, first aid kits, cell phones, and all the modern contrivances that allow us to feel safe as we live our lives. While I wouldn’t want to give up any of these technological advancements, we should remember that taking risks is a necessary component of growth. Sure, falling down hurts, but it’s the best way to learn. And if we cloister ourselves and risk nothing, then we miss out on a lot of what life has to offer — not to mention the thrill of realizing that we’re tougher than we think we are.

A belated congratulations to the McCabes; may your boat-building business allow others to have the same adventures as you did. The world can only benefit from having more adventurers in it.
