“Sports Memories in the Making,” by Jeremy Suede, is a weekly column that looks at all the sports for the upcoming week and picks out games and events that might just be special enough to create a moment that you and your kids will share forever.

Hello all and welcome to yet another week of memories in the making.  If you were watching any of the baseball games last week you would not have been disappointed.  So many late inning rallies and heartache (sorry Cardinal and Red Sox fans) and there is only more to come.  With the League Championship Series’ coming up, the intensity will be raised up another notch.  Great theater for all who watch.

Brett Favre showed us yet again that he can still do it and any doubters should wise up.  He and the Vikings are posed to make a strong push for the Super Bowl.  Who would have thought the Denver Broncos would be 5-0 after going through the Cowboys and the Patriots?  They are a great underdog team to watch and root for with the family.

This is a great time of year for sports and this week promises to be a great one.  Here are my picks for what you and the family should watch and be apart of an experience together.  Enjoy!

Top 3

*All times listed are Eastern Standard Time

1. College Football – #6 USC Trojans at Notre Dame Fighting Irish - Oct. 17 – 3:30 pm

Normally a college football game that doesn’t involve two ranked teams doesn’t get my attention but this classic rivalry game deserves everyone’s attention.  This game gets played every year and this time it is USC’s turn to travel to Notre Dame and deal with a fierce crowd looking to give the Fighting Irish a big advantage.  USC has absolutely dominated in recent years and they will have to keep with that tradition in order to keep their National Title hopes alive.  On the other hand Notre Dame is out to prove they are a powerhouse and will fight with everything they have.  Their quarterback, Jimmy Clausen, is starting to be brought up as a Heisman Trophy candidate and a big win against USC would raise his stock significantly.  Look for a hard fought, well played game by each with a couple memorable moments that will decide the game for either side.  You could probably ask your grandfather and he would have at least one USC/Notre Dame game that sticks out in his mind for something.

2. MLB – Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at New York Yankees – Oct. 16-25 – TBD

Both teams swept their opponents in the Division series and will look to keep that momentum through the League Championship Series and go onto the World Series.  The Yankees are a power hitting lineup that could explode for many runs at any moment.  The Angels are a scrappy team with a few power hitters but plenty of speedy base hitters that will steal bases and get runs anyway they can. This is a well matched contest that will rely on good pitching from both sides.  Starting this long 7 game series with a win in Game 1 carries takes a lot of the pressure off and keeps morale up.  Should be a very good game and no matter what the score is watch until the end because both teams have shown the ability to come from behind.

3. NFL – New York Giants and New Orleans Saints – Oct. 18 – 1 pm

What’s great about undefeated teams playing a game is that one of them will absolutely taste defeat when it is all said and done.  The team that wants to stay on their winning streak will have to play as hard as they’ve played all season and more because this will be a game that goes down to the wire.  Eli Manning and the Giants have dominated their games so far, firmly establishing themselves as the #2 offense and #1 defense in the league.  A lethal combination that makes them the top team in the league.  Drew Brees and his Saints are nipping at their heels though, being the #3 offense and #7 defense and will be looking to slay the Giants (pun intended) and show they are the top team in the NFL.  Each team will pull out all the stops and this will be a game to remember.

Quick Picks

  • NFL – Denver Broncos at San Diego Chargers – Oct. 19 – 8:30 pm- This old school rivalry only gets better with Denver heading into San Diego undefeated and San Diego looking to show they are a team to be reckoned with.  Hard hitting and probably high scoring game.
  • NASCAR Banking 500 – Lowe’s Motor Speedway – Oct. 17 – 7:41 pm – Jimmie Johnson is again at the top of the leader board near the end of the season and a win here will almost solidify his fourth consecutive Sprint Cup Championship.  He’ll be fighting to stay at the top while others fight to knock him from the top.  Great drama.
  • NHL – Los Angeles Kings at New York Rangers – Oct. 14 – 7 pm – As of time of post these teams were the hottest in the league.  If they continue until this game then watch out, it will be something to watch to see which keeps the best record in the league.
