warhorsedm1910_468x336Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip took an unannounced trip to London’s West End this past week to see a production of “War Horse” at the New London Theater. Audience members report that the two were very solicitous of theatergoers who were already seated, apologizing numerous times for having to push their way through to their seats. At the end of the show, the couple received warm applause, which the Queen acknowledged with a wave and a smile.

Apparently the royal couple do this fairly regularly, according to an aide, and always surreptitiously. “The Queen has regularly undertaken similar private visits throughout her reign without any fuss. It allows her to live a bit more of a normal life.”

There is something to be said for taking the time to enjoy one’s life, no matter how busy one’s schedule might be. A recent study claims that children are happier in general when their parents are happy, and one way to relieve the pressure of maintaining a busy life is to knock off now and again to see a movie, or spend time with friends, or just do any old thing just for one’s self. It’s also good for kids to see that their parents have connections outside the family, as that helps with their own sense of socialization — that it’s good to have a variety of influences and the capacity for individual expression. If someone as busy and influential as the Queen of England can make the time to do it, you can too!
