plumbabyPlum Organics, the makers of various healthy food products for children, has issued a voluntary recall of a particular batch of its “Portable Pouches” line of baby food products. Specifically, the Apple & Carrot flavor 4.22 oz. variety has been recalled due to a “mixing error”, which resulted in an improper blending.

Though the open letter to parents doesn’t mention this, the concern arises because of the possibility of contamination with Clostridium botulinum, which is a bacterium that can cause the condition known as botulism, which can cause muscular paralysis. All Apple & Carrot Baby Food Pouches with a “best by” date of May 21, 2010 are being recalled.

It’s scary to think that botulism is even a possibility in any food product concerned with children. It also seems unusual that this kind of test for safety came only after the product had already been shipped. Shouldn’t Plum Organics know about these things before the product is shipped? Fortunately, no health issues have been reported in conjunction with this product.

If you are a consumer of the Plum Organics brand and have purchased this product, check the bottom of the package for the number “890180001221″ to know if you need to send your purchase back.
