air-asia-airlinePassengers of AirAsia flight AK 6506 this past Wednesday were witness to a rare occurrence, as 31 year old went into labor and gave birth to a boy shortly before touch down in Kuala Lumpur. The mother and child were immediately taken to a hospital after landing, and both are doing well.

AirAsia’s director of operations Moses Devanayagam visited the pair in the hospital and made a surprise announcement: “To celebrate this momentous occasion, we decided to present both mother and child with free flights for life.” Can you imagine a gesture of generosity of this magnitude from an American airline?

Sometimes it’s easy to forget that we haven’t always lived in such an accommodating environment, with creature comforts within easy reach and easy access to medical professionals. It is lucky that there was a doctor aboard to help deliver the baby, but even if there weren’t it’s likely that the mother and child would have been fine. The human race didn’t make it this far by being extremely fragile — there have been crazier and more precarious births on record.

Try to remember this the next time you’re feeling put out because you’re forced to walk in the rain without an umbrella, or you’re tired from working a long shift — we humans are resilient creatures. Imagine giving birth in unfamiliar surroundings, completely exposed to the world, at your most vulnerable moment. Will you ever complain of missing a cab again, compared to this? We should learn to glide over life’s little challenges with grace and focus on the bigger picture. We’ll be happier parents because of it, and have happier children as well.
