One of the worst things a singer can do is forget the lyrics to their song. Even worse? Forgetting the lyrics to our nations’ song.

Jesse McCartney got the honor of singing the national anthem at the NASCAR Pepsi 500 in Fontana, California on October 11, and completely forgot the words, leaving onlookers confused, and newscasters jeering.

He didn’t just stumble- he forgot an entire verse. At least he got the first line.

Later, McCartney tweeted of the incident: “Here At the Nascar race! So much fun! Can’t believe I forgot the words to the Anthem! I’ve performed it 100 times. Bad Nerves today I guess!”

Weird that a singer used to performing for sold out arenas can’t handle the national anthem- but, stuff happens. At least he has a good attitude about it. And truth be told, I would rather have someone accidentally forget the lyrics than use the Star Spangled Banner as their chance to show the world their vocal range and their lung capacity, turning it into something completely unrecognizable.

That, of course, excludes guitar renditions.  Still love you, Jimi.
