Every Tuesday, KidGlue presents “Healthy Pick/Makes Me Sick” where Sarah Matheny takes a popular restaurant’s menu and uncovers the most healthy and least healthy items on the menu. This week: Costco’s Food Court.
I love Costco. Not only do I love the fact that I can buy a two pound vat of hummus to go with my ten pound bag of organic carrots, but of course I’m not hating the samples either. Key lime pie? Yes, please. Fresh baked cookie? Uh, okay. Free cupful of Jelly Bellies? You had me at “FREE.” I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve often turned a trip through the samples and a brief stop at the Food Court into many a meal for my family. In tough times like these, the prices cannot be beat. Unfortunately, the nutrition can. Here’s the best and worst choices for you:
Makes Me Sick: Costco Turkey Wrap

Shocking, no? I had assumed this was a fairly healthy choice, and certainly hadn’t pegged it as the worst considering the Hot Pocket-esque Chicken Bake and pizza offerings. But as a result of the mayonnaise and cheese this sandwich has 810 calories and 34 grams of fat. Unfortunately these wraps aren’t made to order like Subway, so unless you want to start scraping with your plastic knife, this just isn’t a great choice.
Healthy Pick: Very Berry Fruit Smoothie

Pass on the Caesar Salad which has 40 grams of fat and 2680 milligrams of sodium, and get a simple fruit smoothie, which is fat free and has only 290 calories. Since this smoothie is higher in sugar than the all fruit versions at Jamba Juice and lacking entirely in protein, this should be considered a treat rather than a meal option. After all, you can always snack on your carrots and hummus on the way home.
