michael-jackson-this-is-it-movie-poster“This Is It” is the new movie documenting Michael Jackson’s comeback tour, composed of backstage and rehearsal footage, opens Tuesday night in theaters across the world. There is as much wild hype around this film as there has been about nearly anything Michael has ever done, but this time there’s an added element of grief to the proceedings.

Certain members of Michael’s family have stated that they feel it’s too soon, and that they won’t be seeing it right away. Michael’s children are said to be excited for it, and Elizabeth Taylor raved “It is the single most brilliant piece of filmmaking I have ever seen.”

But what will the reaction be after seeing an event that will never happen? Will the movie generate more unrequited yearning for what might have been than joy at the power of Michael’s performance? Is it right to share with the public a show that wasn’t the final product, and therefore not ready to be shown? Where is the balance struck between documenting a performer’s work and ghoulishly cashing in on the current post-death consumer frenzy? If MJ’s parents are okay with this, then that has to be the last word, but I can’t help but feel that this movie is premature, and should really be more of a private consideration for his family.

Curious to see it for yourself? “This Is It” tickets are available here. It’s also playing in IMAX in select cities.
