Elisabeth Hasselbeck of “The View” was recently on Barbara Walters’s SIRIUS XM radio show, “Here’s Barbara,” where she discussed the possibility of having a fourth child. While she doesn’t want to have another child, she repeatedly mentioned just how into her husband, Tim Hasselbeck, she is. “I just find him incredibly attractive. So, it’s not like I’m that disciplined, so right now, my strategy is dressing in a way that will not get me pregnant.”
By this of course, she meant wearing outfits that aren’t revealing, aren’t too form-fitting, etc. And she’s obviously trying out humor (some would say for the first time). At the same time, however, is she saying that she has no self-control whatsoever? There is a weird callback here to the old saw about women being sexually assaulted because they dressed a certain way. And while I’m sure this was all innocent “fun”, that was the first thing I thought of when I read the referring article.
Elisabeth just makes it sound as though she is not responsible for any future pregnancies, and I think that sends a bad message to any impressionable young fans she might have. Was this the case with past pregnancies as well? “Cover up or you’ll get pregnant” seems to be the take-home in this story. And while she was probably joking, it’s still a terrible thing to say on a public broadcast.
