Charla Nash was attempting to help her friend put her 200 pound pet chimpanzee back into its house when the chimp attacked her, tearing into her face and hands. The extent of the damage left her without a face, both hands, and both eyes.
Nash now wears a veil to prevent people from seeing her face. She recently appeared on Oprah and removed the veil, allowing the world to witness the results of the surgery performed on her to save what was left of her face. We’ve embedded the clip below.
Parents, be suspicious of any animal that you don’t know — this includes both random dogs on the street and animals in zoos. There is no way to predict animal behavior 100% of the time. Look at what happened to Charla Nash, helping a friend with a pet. I remember a friend of mine whose dog suddenly turned on him one day for no reason, leaving him with a deep scar across his face and scalp. This isn’t to say you shouldn’t have a pet; when you’re in possession of an animal, you have the control and the responsibility to train it properly. But watch your child’s grasping, eager hands when seeing a cute puppy in a park or on the street. Most times, it’s fine. But the other small percentage is too terrible to contemplate.
