Children who are bilingual have a huge advantage in this day and age. They are better able to communicate with a larger range of people, they develop a greater appreciation for the richness of other cultures, and they will even get a leg up in the workforce, as many companies are starting to list ‘bilingual speaking’ as a application prerequisite.
The good news is children are best equipped to pick up a new language as they can pick it up faster than adults, and in a more “native style,” (I have Spanish speaking friends who ask me to speak Spanish and then laugh at my “American accent.”) Experts say children have a better linguistic “elasticity” that allows them to pick up new ways to communicate faster. We adults, we are too stuck in our ways.
