Dwight_Howard-MDThis week brings Thanksgiving and one of my favorite traditions is to sit my butt down and fully enjoy free football in the middle of the week.  I know that it’s a tradition to have the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys play on Thanksgiving Day but maybe we can find a new tradition?  Like having good teams play maybe?  But football is a great thing to have on TV because it will get people cheering (and out of the kitchen) and in a festive mood.

This year maybe try out some basketball though.  With the fast pace and high scoring, high-flying superstars it is easier to watch and understand to the average sports fan.  Anybody can understand that your team needs to put the ball in the hoop more than the other to win.  Check out what the NBA has to offer this Thanksgiving because most likely it will be better than the highly uncompetitive traditional games the NFL is showing.

Congratulations to Jimmie Johnson, he is the first NASCAR driver to win four consecutive titles.  If you watched the race you witnessed history and it will be a race you will remember for a long long time.  You will probably remember it a lot longer than the championship game for the MLS Cup.  Real Salt Lake beat the Los Angeles Galaxy 1-0 on penalty kicks to claim the championship but the lack of action didn’t help the popularity of soccer at all.

Top 3

1. NBA – Orlando Magic at Atlanta Hawks – Nov. 26 @ 8 pm

This year Thanksgiving should be spent watching basketball rather than football because the game is much more competitive and meaningful.  The Atlanta Hawks are one of the hottest teams in the NBA, doing much better than any expected.  If they could beat the reigning Eastern Conference champions that would go a long way for their confidence and respect around the league on a nationally televised game.  Of course, Dwight Howard and his Magic know this and they will try to show why they are at the top and put the upstart team in their place.  If anything, watch just to see Dwight Howard enjoy the game of basketball.  His smile is infectious and his love for the game is a good example to kids.

2. NFL – New England Patriots at New Orleans Saints – Nov. 20 @ 8:30 pm

This will be the second time this season that the Patriots will go up against an undefeated team with one of the top quarterbacks in the league.  Drew Brees and his Saints are unbeaten and off to the best start in their team’s history and they will try to keep that going and slay the mighty Patriots.  Tom Brady is one of the most intense and competitive players in the game and he will not go down to two top quarterbacks in the same season.  But while the Saints’ defense is one of the best in the league, the Patriots’ is wavering and their coach has demonstrated that he does not trust them.  This would be a time for that defense to show they can get the job done against one of the top offenses.  Should be a high scoring game with plenty of passes to go around.

3.  College Football – UCLA at USC Nov. 28 @ 10 pm

Coach Rick Neuheisel is trying to turn around the UCLA football program and a win against powerhouse USC and coach Pete Carroll would go a long way towards his goal.  UCLA is on a three game win streak and USC is trying to salvage a season that started with such high expectations but has turned out to be less than anticipated.  With USC reeling from some losses earlier in the season and with this game being the last of the season this cross-town rivalry is ready to be stepped up and UCLA is primed for an upset.  This should be a hard-fought, tooth and nails game that will have each team leaving everything out on the field and playing like everything is on the line.

Quick Picks

  • NFL – Pittsburgh Steelers at Baltimore Ravens – Nov. 29 @ 8:20 pm- These two great defensive teams are each trying to keep in the hunt for a playoff spot and this game means a lot to each.  Troy Polamalu is out again but the Steelers will always have a formidable defense. Watch to see which teams grinds it out in this low scoring game.
  • New Mexico soccer “star” Elizabeth Lambert has done an interview to explain her actions.  ow do you feel about it now?
