Wow. The moms and daughters of America have spoken this weekend and made “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” the third biggest opening in Hollywood history with an estimated $140.7 million from Friday-Sunday.
Half of that was made on Friday when the film made $72.7 million. Yes, that’s just in one day but, a good chunk of that was made during the midnight shows on Thursday which took in $26.3 million. That is by far the biggest one day box office success in history, beating out last summer’s “The Dark Knight” which made $67.2 million. In the end, though, the $140.7 million still ended up falling short to “Spider-Man 3’s” $151 million and “The Dark Knight’s” $158 million.
So why are we posting these numbers on a parenting Web site?
Well, first of all, your “Twilight” obsessed kids will definitely care. It proves that they are part of something bigger than themselves and it’s almost like a mark of pride. And why wouldn’t it be? Their obsession with Jacob and Edward has written them into the record books.
Second, we’re writing about this to give the numbers a little context. Every year movies come out and break box office records. What is rarely mentioned, however, is inflation. Each year movie tickets are more and more expensive. So while “New Moon” made $140 million in 2009, if it was released at the same time as “Spider-Man 3″ in 2007, you can shave a good $10 million or so off of that, roughly. Two years ago, you might spend $9 to see a movie. Today, that ticket is probably $11. So be sure to take these records with a grain of salt.
Third, the movie made all that money playing to barely half of the general movie going audience. According to Box Office Mojo, “Distributor Summit Entertainment’s exit polling indicated that 80 percent of the audience was female and 50 percent was under 21 years old.” Basically the movie played exclusively to girls who aren’t able to have a drink.
Saying that, though, “Twilight” fans are having their time in the sun. And they will surely hold the all time one day record for a while, at least until “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” comes out in June.
