“Crystal’s Soapbox,” published each Thursday, is a column by conservative Texas mom Crystal Arcand who loves to rant about issues that relate to her kids….and yours.
You know, there was a time that you just knew that the latest animated film to come out was rated G and for the kids. I’ve realized a disturbing trend over the last few years – most are not rated G anymore, and many of them are actually not for the kids. What, the adults weren’t getting enough 600+ films released in the US each year?
Of the top 20 grossing films of 2008, only two were rated G, while three were rated R, four were rated PG, and 11 were rated PG-13.1 Five of those films were animated. Three of the top 10 grossing films of 2009 so far are animated. All of them were rated PG.
Now, granted, kids can’t go to the movies by themselves. Adults are the larger demographic audience for moviegoing. With that in mind, yes, I agree that more movies should probably be aimed at adults. My issue is that it seems even the kids’ realm of movies is being overtaken by adult themes. Even perennially kid-friendly Walt Disney Pictures has been going the way of the PG animated movie with “A Christmas Carol,” “G-Force,” and “Up” – three of the animated films released in 2009.
I hate it when a new animated movie comes out and my kids are all excited about it, only to discover it’s rated PG and they probably won’t get to watch it. At least, not until Mom and Dad watch it first to verify that it actually is a kids’ movie, which means no movie theater experience. Animated film producers – bring back the real kids’ animated films! The ones that are for all kids, not just the tween boys who live and breathe on rude humor.
