Having a popular tune stuck in your head may be annoying, but it could save a life.
The American Heart Association has launched a new CPR education campaign geared towards kids and teens called Be the Beat. One of the most vital components of CPR is the chest compressions, which should be performed at a rate of 100 beats per minute. Be the Beat uses music as an a easy way for people to perform CPR at the proper rate of speed.
I have zero rhythm whatsoever, so I don’t know if I would be able to do chest compressions to a song I was singing in my head, but I have taken many CPR classes, and each time I do, they have a different method than before so I always leave confused. I can remember the words to Michael Jackson’s ‘Man in the Mirror’ better than the newest ratio of breaths to compressions.
So which songs can you use? Visit BeTheBeat.Heart.org (if you are squeamish, beware of the beating heart on the front page, it made me put down my yogurt) to download their entire playlist of 100 beats per minute songs, refresh your CPR skills, play games to earn points and to learn more about the Be the Beat campaign.
I don’t know how comfortable I would be waking up and having someone who is preforming CPR on me singing Justin Timberlake’s ‘Rock Your Body’, but then again, if I woke up, it worked, right?
