Welcome to a tardy edition of S.M.I.M.  I apologize for not having this for Monday as I usually do but we can thank the lovely folks over at the NFL for utilizing their “flex schedule” and changing the game time for the Minnesota Vikings at Arizona Cardinals.  I was at the game, capping off a great sports weekend in Phoenix.

I highly recommend attending an NFL game, at least once.  The atmosphere, energy and excitement is unmatched in sports.  NFL fans only get one game a week to show their team’s pride and they go all out when they do get the chance.  Everybody is into the game and the people around you become immediate friends or rivals depending on who their rooting for.  There can be times when it gets rowdy but if you find a section with good hearted fans who are there to enjoy the game and not live by it, then you will enjoy the whole experience.  Even for non-fans of football, get to a game, just once to feel that energy.  I can’t recommend it enough.

Say good-bye to college football because the regular season has ended and the Bowl games will soon begin.  These are the big games in college football and you never know which one will be the most memorable.  They will all have those magical moments and close games should be watched till the very end because these guys know that when that final whistle goes, that’s it, there is no more.  They will play with all of their hearts and you will highly enjoy watching even the smaller games.

Here are my picks for this week.  I hope you enjoy the memories!

Top 3

1. NFL – Philadelphia Eagles at New York Giants – Dec. 13 @ 8:20 pm

This is one of the oldest and most intense rivalries in all of sports and with the way this season has played out, this game will be more intense than previous years.  The Eagles have shown that they are a strong team and are currently tied with the Dallas Cowboys for first place in the NFC East Division.  The Giants have been struggling this year but they had a huge win over the Cowboys last week and are starting to show signs of life again.  This game could either bring the Giants up to that tie or elevate the Eagles to the top (all depending on how Dallas plays this week too).  On top of all the decades of hatred towards each other, this week there are playoff spots at stake and that ratchets up the intensity.  These teams will not only look to beat the other but will look to own the other team.  Bragging rights, playoffs, and two teams looking to destroy the other makes for the high probability of great memories.

2. NBA – Boston Celtics at Chicago Bulls – Dec. 12 @ 8 pm

The Boston Celtics have not been back to Chicago since last year’s epic seven game series in the playoffs and after losing earlier this year at Boston, the Chicago Bulls will be looking to exact revenge.  The Bulls did not have as good of a record as the Celtics so they did not secure home-court advantage through the playoffs.  If they are serious about going far in the playoffs they will have to beat teams like Boston in the regular season to secure the huge advantage of playing on your home-court more than the other team.  The Celtics know this and they will be playing just as hard to make sure they get that advantage again.  These teams went hard at each other before and they will most assuredly do it again.  Look for a very physical game with big stars new and old.

3. NHL – Los Angeles Kings at San Jose Sharks – Dec. 9 @ 10:30 pm

The Kings have come out firing this year and looking to show they aren’t the same team they were last year.  The Sharks are looking to continue being one of the hottest teams in the NHL.  The west coast has never received much respect when it comes to hockey.  But in recent years, the west coast has proven that they can hang with the big boys of the east and this game will fully show the might of these two teams from the west.  They are both ranked in the Top 10 of all teams and both will be looking to make a strong statement by beating the other.  It will be a very hard hitting game with young stars showing they can play and why you should root for them.

Quick Picks

  • The BCS has selected the matchups for all of the Bowl games.  If you can, just watch any of the bowl games, even the lesser ones.  Those kids out there on the field have worked hard all year to get there and they will give even more to try and raise whatever trophy is on the line.  Some of them will never play football again so they will play with everything they have and more to make sure they have no regrets.
  • Heisman Trophy Ceremony – Dec. 12 @ 8 pm – The highest honor any college football player can receive is the Heisman and for the first time in a long time, there is no clear cut winner.  Watch and see true emotion when one of the top 5 players of the year learn who is the best.
