It’s not enough to just say that Christmas is the season of giving. We have to teach the principle by example. Since my own kids were small, I’ve tried to demonstrate each year a way that they can help other kids that don’t have as much as they do (even though they’re convinced they don’t have enough). By focusing on children, our kids are more clearly able to see and understand what poverty and need really are like in terms they can understand. No money for bills isn’t a concept they can understand; no toys is something that hits close to home for kids. There are several charities that have special Christmas programs to help children.
- Marine Toys for Tots Foundation – donate new toys to be distributed to children in your community
- Prison Fellowship Angel Tree – donate toys to children of prisoners in their parent’s names
- Salvation Army Angel Tree – grab an angel from the tree and buy gifts for an underprivileged child in your community to be delivered with a food box
- Operation Christmas Child – fill a shoebox-sized care package of toys, clothes and toiletries for a needy child around the world
Find the one that fits your family best and make Christmas special for a needy child this year!
