Every Tuesday, KidGlue presents “Healthy Pick/Makes Me Sick” where Sarah Matheny takes a popular restaurant’s menu and uncovers the most healthy and least healthy items on the menu. This week: Burger King.
It’s probably no big surprise that as a vegan, I’m not a huge fan of Burger King. “Monarchs of flame broiled flesh” just aren’t my thing, no matter how gorgeously creepy their plastic masked mascot is. So in writing this article, I played a little game with myself called, “If Someone Was About to Detonate a Nuclear Bomb and Destroy the World Unless You Ate Something From the Burger King Menu, What Would You Eat?” Sounds fun, right? Here’s my choice and the item that might just be worth world destruction to avoid.
Makes Me Sick: Tender Crisp Chicken Sandwich

You are shocked it’s not the Whopper, right? Well, this sandwich packs a whopping punch of calories and fat in it’s own right (790 calories, 44 grams of fat), all wrapped up in deep fried coating, mayonnaise, cheese slices and a starchy white bun. Kaboom.
Healthy Pick: BK Veggie Burger, Hold the Mayo

Sure it’s just a Morningstar Garden Veggie Patty, and it’s on a white bun, but if you hold the mayo, it really isn’t too bad nutritionally at 34o calories and 8 grams of fat. It’s not squeaky clean, but it’s also not worth blowing up the world over.
