
Gingerbread is another classic holiday flavor and no one’s holiday spread could be complete without it. If you want to make a gingerbread house, get a kit, and some tissues, because someone is going to end up crying, and it’ll probably be you. You can bring down the difficulty level a tad, however, and make gingerbread cookies, which don’t require much team work or a carpenter’s license to get the walls to stand.
Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon ginger
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon clove
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/4 cup margarine
- 1/4 cup molasses
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon brown sugar
- 1/4 cup water
- cookie cutters
- red, green and yellow frosting
- candy to decorate (red hots, chocolate chips, peppermints)
- In a small bowl combine flour, ginger, baking powder, cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg. Set aside.
- In small saucepan, melt margarine, sugars and molasses over low heat. Pour liquid into a large bowl; cool for 10 minutes.
- After cool, stir in flour mixture and 1/4 cup water until well blended. Cover; chill 1 hour.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Roll out dough 1/8-inch thick. Cut out cookies using cookie cutters. You can re-roll out the extras to get as many cookies as you can.
- Spray baking sheet with non-stick spray and arrange cookies evenly.
- Bake 5 to 7 minutes until firm.
- Let cookies cool and have a blast decorating them!
