Make Holiday Treats Together: Gingerbread Cookies

By Kelly Turner on December 24th, 2009

Gingerbread-2-1
Gingerbread is another classic holiday flavor and no one’s holiday spread could be complete without it.  If you want to make a gingerbread house, get a kit, and some tissues, because someone is going to end up crying, and it’ll probably be you.  You can bring down the difficulty level a tad, however, and make gingerbread cookies, which don’t require much team work or a carpenter’s license to get the walls to stand.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon clove
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup margarine
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • cookie cutters
  • red, green and yellow frosting
  • candy to decorate (red hots, chocolate chips, peppermints)
  1. In a small bowl combine flour, ginger, baking powder, cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg.  Set aside.
  2. In small saucepan, melt margarine, sugars and molasses over low heat.  Pour liquid into a large bowl; cool for 10 minutes.
  3. After cool, stir in flour mixture and 1/4 cup water until well blended.  Cover; chill 1 hour.
  4. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  5. Roll out dough 1/8-inch thick.  Cut out cookies using cookie cutters.  You can re-roll out the extras to get as many cookies as you can.
  6. Spray baking sheet with non-stick spray and arrange cookies evenly.
  7. Bake 5 to 7 minutes until firm.
  8. Let cookies cool and have a blast decorating them!
