Mama’s Recipe Box: Savory Cheese Bread Hors d’Oeuvres

cheese_bread-MDEvery New Years Eve we have our appetizer staples. There are the cheese puffs, the lil’ smokies, pigs in a blanket and my personal favorite, these little tangy, gooey things. I don’t know where they came from or who thought them up, but they are super delicious. If you are feeling adventurous, you can play around with the cheeses by adding goat cheese, feta, parmesan, etc. to the mozzarella.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 3/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 cup diced red onion
  • 1 package of cocktail bread, I prefer rye

Directions:

  1. Preheat your broiler to med (about 450 degrees)
  2. Mix cheese, mayo and onions together in a bowl.
  3. Spoon about 2 teaspoons of the cheese mixture onto each slice of cocktail bread.
  4. Place bread onto a cookie sheet and broil for 2-4 minutes.  Watch them carefully because they cook fast.
  5. Remove from the broiler, cool slightly and enjoy!
