We all have things that we would like to improve in our life. Every January 1st we have a new chance to commit to change. Not that you can’t change in the middle of the year, but New Years always feel so fresh and, well, new. You get to start over untethered from last year’s baggage. So what will you vow to change this year and more importantly, how will you stick to it? Here are the top 5 New Years resolutions Americans make each year and some tips to keep them.
- Get Out Of Debt. Money can be a tremendous cause of stress. If your finances have gotten out of control this resolution could really improve your quality of life. Your debt may seem like an insurmountable mess, but it is easier to conquer than most people think. Here are some tips for paying down your debt. If your debt is more that 3 times your annual salary or you can’t make minimum payments, you may consider bankruptcy. Most filers keep all of their possessions, including their house and car, and are able to rebuild their credit in as little as 3 years.
- Lose Weight. Most of us can stand to shed a few pounds. If you are moderately overweight, losing just 10 percent of your body weight can significantly lower your BMI and you risk for heart disease. When starting out you should aim small. Losing 50 pounds in 3 months is not very realistic and will likely leave you frustrated and ready to give up in just a few weeks. Instead aim to lose 10 percent of your body weight in 3 months and spend the next 3 months maintaining that loss before aiming for more. This will take you down at least a size or two every six months, which is just right for lasting weight loss.
- Quit Smoking/Drinking. Smoking and excessive drinking are are two of the worst habits you can have for your health. Because both of these substances are extremely addictive and usually involve more than just a physical dependence, seeking support groups and professional guidance are usually essential to success. Support groups are free and many areas have free or low cost counseling. Some major health insurance providers will cover counseling or rehab expenses as well.
- Spend More Time With Your Family and Friends. What is life if you aren’t spending it with the ones you love? So often work and other commitments can keep us from what matters most. But with a little time management, you can find more free time. Schedule standing dates. Try family game night every Saturday or set a girls’ night out with your girlfriends on the first Friday of each month. Once these commitments are penciled in, it is easier to work around them.
- Give More. Whether it is your time, skills or resources; giving to others is always a great goal to have. If you are looking to volunteer check out http://www.volunteermatch.org/ to find the opportunity that is right for you.
