Along with 2009, last week we also said bon voyage to the NFL regular season, Tim Tebow in college football and his coach, Urban Meyer, who may have coached his last game. But as with everything, life goes on and a new year brings us plenty to look forward to. Thursday is the national championship game for college football and we will get to see a new champion crowned. This is what the entire season is played for and this game will finally settle who is the best (according to the BCS), something that even casual fans should not miss. Future NFL stars (or duds) will shine and memories that go down in history that will be played out on the field.
The NFL playoffs begin this weekend too and with no college football to get in the way, we get football on Saturday and Sunday. And don’t worry, you don’t have double vision. Yes, there are THREE games being played this week that were also played between the exact teams last week, only this time the games have much more meaning. Last week they may have been playing possum a little and not showing off their full arsenal to teams they will be seeing in the playoffs. This week they are playing for everything, it’s win or go home and they will pull out all the stops. Gritty, dirty, hard nosed football will be played and stars will need to come out to play or else they won’t be shining again until next season.
Yet another football heavy week but everything will be over with in just a few short weeks so we need to live it up while we still can. Enjoy this week in sports!
Top 3
1. College Football – No. 2 Texas Longhorns vs. No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide – BCS National Championship Game - Jan. 7 @ 8 pm
There isn’t much to do when trying to hype up this game. It’s the two top schools in the entire country battling it out for the honor to be called the best. Colt McCoy (who has the coolest name for a quarterback from Texas ever) was again passed over for the Heisman Trophy so he will be looking to prove everyone wrong when he goes up against the winner, Mark Ingram and his Crimson Tide. So not only do you have the two top teams playing, you also get the two top players in the country playing against each other. Some of the players will never play at the NFL level so this is their last time for glory. Watch for the unknown young man who will go down in college football lore forever and you can say you saw it. It could be a moment you will never forget because you watched it happen. What more do I really need to say to get you to watch this game? It’s the Super Bowl of College Football.
2. College Football – No. 6 Boise St. Broncos vs. No. 4 TCU Horned Frogs – Fiesta Bowl - Jan. 4 @ 8 pm
Some would argue that either of these teams could contend for the National Championship and the only reason they don’t get a chance is because they are in the wrong conference. To me it doesn’t matter what conference you are in, a winning team doesn’t need to be made of of high profile recruits, all it needs is to be a team and play together. But unfortunately the world doesn’t work that way and instead of getting a chance to play with the big boys, they get to play each other. But don’t think they won’t let that affect them on the field. In fact it will only make them play harder and with something to prove. Boise St. gave us one of the all time greatest college football moments a couple years ago and they will absolutely be looking to leave another such impression. TCU is looking to make that same impression but only bigger. They want to prove they can play with the top teams and will come out with guns ablazing. Make sure to watch the whole game because Boise St. has shown us that anything can happen. Can they make the stuff of legends again?
3. NFL – Philadelphia Eagles at Dallas Cowboys – Jan. 9 @ 8 pm
Last week the Cowboys thoroughly trounced and embarrassed the Eagles. They will be looking to do the same this week because the entire season and more hangs in the balance. The Cowboys have not won a playoff game since 1996 and they have lost them in colossal ways in recent years. That is one monkey Tony Romo will personally be looking to get off his back. Unfortunately for him it won’t be so easy with Donovan McNabb suffering from the same playoff jinx. The Eagles gave been a contending team since McNabb came to the team but they have never gone all the way and won a Super Bowl, something that he desperately wants to do Watch as two of the best teams with two of the best quarterbacks face off to get one step closer to the ultimate goal. Either way, one team will get past a recent hurdle and one team will continue to fall short.
Quick Picks
- NBA – Cleveland Cavaliers at Denver Nuggets- Jan. 10 @ 10:30 pm – One name: Lebron James. And if that doesn’t get you I’ve got another, Carmelo Anthony. Still need a reason to watch? Fine. They are each first in their respective division and want to see how they measure up against the best. WATCH.
