Every year when I get together with my extended family we have a family game fest.  Most of the games we play are too complicated for my kids to understand, but they still have fun being our “helpers” while we play.  Here are our favorites for family fun.

  1. Balderdash

    absolute-balderdash-1

In this board game players are given a word, a person, an acronym, a movie or a silly law to make up a description about.  The object is to guess the correct answer while trying to get your opponents to pick your answer.  It is so fun to play with family because you all know each other so well.  So when some answers are read out loud we all laugh and say, “Oh, Mom wrote that one!”  My 5-year old enjoys running our answers to the reader when we are done writing them.

  2. Uno

    Uno-1

This card game is always a blast at our house.  There are many versions out now, but we still prefer the original.  The object is simple, get rid of all of your cards the fastest.  The fun part is that in the process of getting rid of your cards, you have to put up obstacles for everyone else by making them draw cards or skipping their turn.  We get so serious about Uno that when we sit down to play certain family members won’t sit next to each other.  We still laugh about things that happened during games we played years ago.

  3. Would You Rather

The object in this board game is to guess how your opponents think.  One player reads a card that gives two options like, “Would you rather not be able to shave for a year or have to shave your head for a year?”  The reader has to guess what they think the group will choose.  Then the rest of the players have to come to a unanimous decision and check to see if the reader got it right.  This game is especially fun to play if your family has  diverse points of view.

  4. Monopoly

We all know this one.  Gather wealth and property while sending your opponents to the poor house (or jail).  Trading properties is always a challenge at our house because I have an unrealistic brother, but that adds to the fun of it.  We have the electronic game, so my boys have fun adding and subtracting money for us on the little bank gadget.  We just have to keep an eye on them so that they do the right amounts.  This year I got the card version, Monopoly Deal, for Christmas.  It is faster and makes it easier to acquire property.  But all-in-all it really is Monopoly in card form!

  5. Clue

The classic who done it game.  We always have fun making guesses and scribbling notes while reading each others reactions.  This year my sister got the “The Office” version for Christmas.  It adds some extra cards for twists and turns that make the game a lot more fun to play.  Watch out for that clock card!
