Fitting Fitness Into A Busy Schedule

By Bonnie Owens on January 8th, 2010

AerobicExercise-MDWhen your life revolves around the schedule of little people it can be hard to find time for yourself.  But it is essential to your health and sanity to workout at least a few times a week.  Nothing is more effective in protecting your overall health than regular exercise.  It decreases your chance for obesity, diabetes, heart disease, depression and a slew of other nasty ailments.  Here are some ways that you can cram exercise into your daily routine.

  • Start early. Get up before everyone else and workout in the morning.
  • Make your daily work count. Household chores can be great exercise, but only if you move it.  Do it at a pace that makes you sweat.
  • Use your free time twice as effectively. Our first instinct is to sit down in front of the boob tube to unwind.  Keep the TV, but get off you your butt.  Get a stationary bike or treadmill and do it as you watch your shows.  Or you can stretch or use free weights.
  • Make it into family time. You can go for family bike rides or play a game of tag or football together.
  • Find the right gym. My kids love the child care center at our gym.  They are always begging to go there.  This makes it a lot easier (and guiltless) for me to workout.  It feels like I am doing something good for me and treating them at the same time.
  • Pump up your desk. Replace your chair with a balance ball and put a mini-stepper at your feet to help you firm and burn while you surf the net.
