Sports Memories in the Making: Jan. 11 – 17

By Jeremy Suede on January 11th, 2010

Drew_Brees_Saints-MDBye-bye college football.  The Big Game has been played and I must say that I was disappointed.  Texas’ star quarterback Colt McCoy unfortunately got injured during the first few minutes and had to be taken out.  That ends his collegiate career on a sour note but he is projected to be a first round draft pick for the NFL so his woes will be eased by millions of dollars.  All due respects and congrats go to the Alabama Crimson Tide though, the way they played I don’t think it would have mattered if Colt was playing the whole game.

The NFL kicked off its post season with a few surprises:

  1. The Patriots looked bad (really bad).
  2. The Jets looked good (really good).
  3. The highest scoring playoff game ever was played.
  4. The Cowboys won their first playoff game since 1996

The fun continues this weekend too so make sure to watch.  The top teams received a Bye last week so we’ll get to see if the extra time off made them stronger or softened them up.  Playoff football is always great to watch because it’s win or go home to a long bitter off season.  So get it while it lasts because before you know it the Super Bowl will be here and then nothing until September.

Top 3

1. NFL – Arizona Cardinals at New Orleans Saints – Jan. 16 @ 4:30 pm

Last week the Cardinals played in the highest scoring playoff game ever against the Green Bay Packers and this week they are going up against the regular season’s best offense in the league.  This game could very well break the record set last week.  Kurt Warner could also be playing in his last NFL game as well.  It was recently announced that he would retire after this season so this could be it if Arizona loses.  Drew Brees and his Saints lost the last 3 games of the regular season so expect them to come out firing on all cylinders to prove that they were not just a fluke in the regular season.  They won’t be sentimental towards Kurt either and would be more than happy to send him home packing.  Look for a lot of passing and high flying catches by some of the league’s best. A must watch.

2. NFL – Dallas Cowboys at Minnesota Vikings – Jan. 17 @ 1 pm

Brett Favre finally made it to the playoffs again but will he finish what he came back to do and go all the way to winning the Super Bowl?  He and his Vikings  have a great offense and defense so they very well could but first they will have to take down one of the hottest teams in the NFL.  The Cowboys finally won a playoff game and they will be looking to go all the way and prove that they are more than just a flashy team, but the best of all teams.  Tony Romo has lead the Cowboys to some solid victories over the last couple weeks and will try to continue to prove that he belongs amount the top quarterbacks in the game.  If the Vikings lose then the whole Brett Favre Experiment will have been a bust and all the hype will have been for nothing.  This also has the potential to be Brett’s last game as well.  Just yet another reason to watch what should be a very exciting game.

3.  NBA – Los Angeles Lakers at Dallas Mavericks – Jan. 13 @ 8:30 pm

Kobe Bryant and his Lakers have been a little injury plagued and have lost a couple games recently but still maintain their status as the best team in the league.  Dallas is on a hot streak and currently second in the Western Conference (behind the Lakers).  This is an important game for each team because it will mean a big win over a top team and that will go a long way for confidence in players.  Dirk Nowitzki will look to dominate the Lakers and show that he is still up to his MVP caliber form. Depending on how the Pau Gasol recoveries from his hamstring injury will determine just how close the game will be.  The Lakers are a much better team with him and they will need all the size they can to stand up to a very physical Dallas team.  Besides all that, Kobe Bryant will be playing and you never know when he is going to have a memorable performance.
