3D TV is coming to a home near you, but will the new technology incite a consumer spending spree? Digital and Hi-Def TV did their fair share to carry the television industry for a few years, but with the economy the way it is, something new is needed to get people interested again. 3D just might be that something.
3D has gained a lot of popularity recently due to box office gold Avatar, but the technology to bring 3D into your home was being developed long before the movie hit the big screen. LG, Sharp, Moto, Sony and other flat screen developers have been working on in-home 3D for quite sometime, and the success of Avatar has done nothing but just validate their investment and proven that the public is more than eager to bring 3D home.
At this years Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 3D TVS are the stars. The idea of 3D at home entertainment was teased at CES 2009, but this year, manufacturers have actual products, ready for purchase by the end of this year, if not earlier.
There are a few predicted snags, however. Many experts feel that while consumers have turned up in droves to see 3D movies, many will not actually want 3D, all the time, in their homes- especially since they will have to wear 3D glasses with most models. The second is the fear that consumers already have upgrade fatigue from the ‘digital revolution’ where consumers had to either upgrade to digital TVs or get a, HD converter. In the slow economy that is already harming the TV industry, funneling their money into developing more expensive televisions so soon might backfire, especially with predicted price tags of anywhere from $1,100 to $5,000.
One group of consumers that is more than thrilled about 3D TVs are gamers. Video games have morphed from simple games of strategy and chance into entire fantasy worlds, with characters you build and groom and clothe that interact with each other on a personal level. Graphics have improved, consoles have improved and story lines have improved, but things have gotten about as good as they can get- in 2D. Now, with the notion of 3D gaming at the doorstep, gamers are more excited than ever to snatch up the newest wave of games to hit the market.
Get ready, because 3D is here, and very soon will be the next big gadget your kids will be begging you for.
