Emma Watson, who plays Hermione Granger in the wildly popular Harry Potter movies, is the new face of Burberry, the high fashion clothing line who made plaid cool again.
And, unfortunately, it seems even 18 year olds are not exempt from ridiculous photoshopping in the fashion world.
There is a lot of controversy surrounding Watson’s photoshopped appearance in her new Burberry ads. A little airbrushing to smooth skin or hide hair fly aways is one thing, but much like Demi Moore’s missing hip bone, apparently editors felt one of Watson’s legs just didn’t make the cut.
As you can tell from the video above, Miss Watson does, indeed, have two legs. Two very nice, normal proportionate legs (even if they are capped by hideous beige socks.) In some of the ads, however, one leg, or part of that leg are missing.
In the picture that resulted from the poses in the video, the portions of her leg that is behind her male model partner (which is actually her brother in real life) that were originally visible, like her knee and part of her shin, have been removed by photo editors, giving the appearance that she ends mid thigh. In the second ad receiving scrutiny, Watson’s leg in the forefront has been smoothed and evened so much they just took out her knee completely.
WHY!?
Do photo editors really think we don’t notice things like this? What is so distracting about a leg or a knee cap that it must be removed to make a picture marketable? It must be that the young Watson needed no touch up help anywhere else, and air brushers became so bored with their lack of work that they decided to play Where’s Waldo with her limbs in order to clock some hours. That must be it. There is no other excuse.
It’s distracting, unnecessary and makes the beautiful, young Emma Watson look deformed. At the very least, it is another opportunity to point out to your kids just how ridiculous photoshopping is, and how much computers are used to change the appearance, weight and size of models- or, now, even their limb count.
