Yep, Taylor Pugh is still in the news and his hair is still long. Monday night, the Mesquite school board offered a compromise on Taylor’s hair. “Taylor can return to class if his hair is braided close to his head, over his ears and is not gathered in a bun on his neck.” Sounds simple enough. Taylor gets to keep the long hair he “loves,” he’s in class with the other children, and his hair isn’t over his ears or collar (in accordance with the school grooming policy). Mom and Dad aren’t having it, though.
Elizabeth Taylor (No, not that one) said after the meeting, “If I braid his hair, his scalp will bleed and his hair will break.” She and Delton Pugh are weighing their options, saying, “I know that there are a whole set of steps we can take.” They are considering taking the district to court or appealing to the State Board of Education. “He doesn’t have to just take this,” she told reporters.
Taylor’s hair was in a ponytail high on his head Monday night when he and his parents attended the closed school board meeting. Tuesday morning, Taylor’s mother took him to school with his hair in a ponytail, which is still against the school’s grooming policies. She acknowledged that she knew it was against the school’s policies and that her son would still be in suspension for his hair.
