Johnson & Johnson expanded a recall of over-the-counter medications for the second time in less than a month after complaints of a moldy smell that made users sick. The new recall now includes some batches of regular and extra-strength Tylenol, children’s Tylenol, eight-hour Tylenol, Tylenol arthritis, Tylenol PM, children’s Motrin, Motrin IB, Benadryl Rolaids, Simply Sleep, and St. Joseph’s aspirin.
Johnson & Johnson’s McNeil Consumer Healthcare Products recalled some Tylenol Arthritis Caplets in November due to the same moldy smell, which was reported to cause nausea, pain, vomiting and diarrhea. In December, the company expanded the recall to include Tylenol Arthritis Caplets. Prior to the December recall, Johnson & Johnson also recalled 57 batches of Infant and Children’s Tylenol for contamination.
The Food and Drug Administration is reportedly frustrated with the handling of the recall, and has said McNeil knew of the problem in early 2008 but did not thoroughly investigate.
The agency said about 70 people were either sickened or noticed the strange odor. The FDA says the odor is caused by chemical used to treat wooden pallets, which can leach into the air and was traced back to a facility in Puerto Rico.
If you’ve purchased any of these products recently, you’ll want to check the batch numbers on your bottle to make sure they are not contaminated. For a full list of all recalled products and the lot numbers of recalled batches, click here.
