Have you ever had one of those days where you had bills to pay, laundry to do, dishes to wash, a yard to clean and a feisty little toddler running around your ankles looking for something to do? This is my situation more times than I would like to think about. I can manage most of it, but finding something fun for my son to do on his own was always a challenge. That was until I turned to the wonderful world wide web. A while ago I found a few Web sites that keep my son thoroughly entertained for an hour or so while get stuff done. And I don’t feel as guilty as I would when I tried to use the TV as a baby sitter because these Web sites build their mind, coordination and computer skills. Here are a few of the Web sites that my kids are crazy about.
- www.pbskids.org – Yes the same PBS from when you were a kid. The TV station that introduced “Sesame Street” and “Mister Rogers” has come a long way. They still have the old classics; but now they also have a slew of other kids shows too, including “Clifford The Big Red Dog” and “Curious George.” These shows teach everything from manners to reading. Their Web site has a plethora of games that are easy for little ones to catch on to, videos that explain science experiments, math problems, reading skills, etc. And there’s printable material for your child to work on away from the computer.
- www.gogolingo.com- I have written about this Web site before, but I couldn’t leave it off the list. It teaches Spanish and entertains at the same time. My 3-year-old is always asking to play “go go wingo”.
- www.kids.nationalgeographic.com- This Web site has super fun games and lots of info to teach your little wildlife lover. There are quizzes, cool animal videos, fun facts and activities and crafts that they can do to help the animals around you.
- www.funology.com- Touts itself as the ultimate boredom buster and it does just that. There are so many activities and games that your child will never run out of things to do. From magic tricks to jokes to weird science, this Web site will blow your kid’s mind.
- www.nickjr.com- I have written about this one before too, but it is my go-to when all else fails. It has the same fun, educational games as other sites with the bonus of being taught by my kids favorite characters. It also has radio with favorite songs from the shows and and art where kids can create masterpieces and email them to friends and family.

Dear Bonnie, I wonder if you could take a look at our web site at http://www.keen2learn.co.uk We promote educational games used as teaching resources to schools. Many teachers recommend the games to parents who want to support the schooling process at home, great for parents of struggling children

Here's a site that I think our readers might enjoy. It is called MEET ME AT THE CORNER, Virtual Field Trips for Kids (www.meetmeatthecorner.org) This series of free educational video pod casts is directed at kids ages 7-12. Each three-minute episode includes links to fun websites, a list of recommended books and a Learning Corner of questions and extended activities about the topic. New episodes are uploaded every two weeks. On 1/18 there will be an episode about Everyday Physics from the New York Hall of Science. On February 1, there's a show about Thomas Edison filmed at the new Thomas Edison Museum in West Orange New Jersey. And later in February, there is an episode on how to prepare for your school science fair.
