This time of year means a lot of indoor sports (basketball, hockey) but first football needs to make its grand exit. Conference championships are this weekend and then there will just be the Super Bowl to look forward to. The Pro Bowl will be next week but that doesn’t count as a real game. This week we get to see the top 4 teams square off and see which belongs in the Super Bowl. In each game there is the veteran quarterback going up against a younger quarterback looking to make a bigger name for themselves. The drama is built in because of all the big names (Favre, Manning, Brees) and Sunday afternoon will be a hardcore football day filled with awesome plays which make for some awesome memories.
Top 3
1. NFL – NFC Championship Game – Minnesota Vikings at New Orleans Saints – Jan. 24 @ 6:40 pm
Brett Favre is one step closer to achieving his goal of winning the Super Bowl and showing those Green Bay Packers that they made the wrong mistake in counting him out as a quarterback in the NFL. But Drew Brees and his Saints are looking to play spoiler and bring Brett’s dreams crashing down around him. Both of these teams have been at the top of the league the entire year and this will be a game to remember. Each team wants nothing more than to win and go onto the Super Bowl but only one can go and this battle will be a good one. The oldest quarterback going up against one of the best young quarterbacks is something no one should miss. With the big game on the line each of these teams will play with everything that have and when all is said and done only one will be happy and the other will just be bitter.
2. NFL – AFC Championship Game – New York Jets at Indianapolis Colts – Jan. 24 @ 3 pm
Wow. The Jets have come out of no where to get to this game and they are looking to ride their wave of momentum all the way to the Super Bowl. They came from behind last week to overtake the Chargers and now they are really cooking. The Colts had perfection within their grasp during the regular season but seemed to let up a little bit and did not pursue history to the full extent of their abilities, much to the dismay of football fans everywhere. The Colts have to win this game or they will have thrown everything away – no perfection and no ultimate championship. Mark Sanchez is a rookie and the Colts will be looking to exploit his inexperience in such a high pressure game. Peyton Manning on the other hand is the best quarterback in the league and perhaps the entire history of the league so the Jets will simply be looking to put as much pressure on him because he will be ready for a game with this much on the line.
3. NHL – Washington Capitals at Pittsburgh Penguins – Jan. 21@ 7:30
The Capitals are the surprising third best team in the league and they will be looking to solidify their status by taking out one of the other top teams in the league. The Penguins are the eighth best in the league and have a long history of being the best. Each team has one of the brightest stars in the league; Sidney “The Kid” Crosby for the Penguins and Alex Ovechkin for the Caps. These two have a fierce rivalry and look forward to any chance they have to play each other. Each team is looking to make a statement about who’s better and their two stars are looking to one-up each other to make sure everyone knows they are the best. I’m not a big hockey fan but watching promising stars do their thing against each other is always worth watching. You never know who will come out on top with the more amazing play.
Quick Picks
- NBA – Los Angeles Lakers at Cleveland Cavaliers – Jan. 21 @ 8 pm- Kobe Bryant vs. Lebron James. What more needs to be said?
- NBA – Dallas Mavericks at Boston Celtics – Jan. 18 @ 8 pm – Two first place teams meet looking to make a statement to the other about who’s the best. They may meet later in the championships so each team will be looking to gain the mental edge with a big win here.
