CNN correspondent Anderson Cooper has long been a leading newsman known for his professionalism and journalistic dedication. One of the first rules of journalism is to report the story and not make yourself the story. But I think this act of kindness that has made Anderson a story will be overlooked by critics.
While reporting on a looting taking place in the capital of earthquake ravaged Haiti, Port-au-Prince, he rushed into the center of danger to rescue a boy injured during the looting. There were people on top of the building throwing down pieces of concrete on the looters but one struck the boy in the head and bleeding badly. He became disoriented and as the blood poured down his face Anderson ran in and dragged him out of danger. Still in the area of danger, the boy was carried by Anderson and with the help of some Haitian people, the boy was taken care of. The boy was taken away and Anderson still does not know what happened to him.
In a country torn apart by a devastating natural disaster where there is looting and a serious lack of medical supplies, an act of heroism is hard to come by. This was one of those moments where no matter what your profession is, humanity was more important and the right choice was made. At a place filled with negativity right now, Anderson Cooper has done something positive towards people not his own. Something that is never wrong.
