pregnancypactGirlsLifetime will premiere a new original movie, The Pregnancy Pact, this Saturday, January 23 at 9 p.m. Pop some popcorn and grab a blanket, because this is one you are going to want to watch with your teens.

You may recall the 2008 ‘pregnancy pact’ scandal involving 17 girls at Gloucester High School in Massachusetts that reportedly agreed to get pregnant at the same time. The high school’s principal, Joseph Sullivan, exposed the story during an interview with TIME magazine claiming the girls planned the pregnancies and planned to raise the children together.

The pact has been denied by the real life teen moms, but the pregnancies happened.  Inspired by the bizarre story, The Pregnancy Pact follows Sidney Bloom (Thora Birch), a magazine journalist, who comes back to her hometown to investigate the surge in teenage pregnancies at her old high school. She butts heads with Lorraine Dougan (Nancy Travis), the head of the local conservative values group and mother of Sara, a pregnant 15-year-old.  The school nurse (Camryn Manheim) tries to convince the school to provide contraception to students to curb the pregnancy epidemic but is met with great opposition from all sides. To make matters worse, TIME Magazine reports that the rise in the number of pregnancies at the school is due to the so-called “pregnancy pact,” and a media circus erupts around the small town.

It’s heavy stuff, and a topic most parents would prefer to sit back and just cross their fingers about, but it has to be addressed.  No matter what your beliefs or values, watch this one with your kids.   The facts are, teenage pregnancy is on the rise for the first time in over a decade.   Listen, really listen, to what your kids think about the movie, and you both may learn something.
